| Thoughts on Fremont Speedway |

| 4/25/2009 - We had the good fortune of attending a race at Fremont Speedway in Fremont, OH. We had never been there before but with the help of our friend Greta (the nickname for our GPS unit) and a nice trip through the northern Ohio countryside we found the speedway located at the fairgrounds. We found a primo place to park just outside the entry gate and under a nice shade tree. The gates had not opened yet but we talked to the gatekeepers and they allowed us to walk in and tape our blanket down. Shortly thereafter the gates opened, we got our passes and headed to the pits. There was a great turnout of 410's, 305's, and trucks. After spending an hour and a half cruising the pits and taking pictures, we stopped by the concession stand under the grandstands for a little food before the race start. I found the walking tacos to be very good. My better half had the chicken and it was almost more than he could eat. The race started on time and ran VERY smoothly. There was little downtime between events, the announcers did a great job, the crowd was great, and the racing was fantastic. One of the neatest things the track did, the winner of each 305 heat was presented a trophy which he, in turn, came into the stands and presented to a young fan. We saw some pretty excited kids. What a cool way to introduce these young people to the sport of racing. We understand that this is a weekly event with one week the 305 drivers presenting their trophy and the next week it is the 410 drivers. Attending races at places like Eldora and Knoxville, it is easy to take a superb safety crew for granted but it only takes one instance at a track where safety is an afterthought to realize how crucial it is. I am happy to say that Fremont Speedway takes the safety of their drivers to heart and their safety crew did a great job in responding with the proper equipment. Fortunately, there were no serious accidents but I am confident that had there been one, the crew could have handled it. Bottom line is that we really enjoyed this track and we will be going back to see more races there. |
